Low Water Pressure in Your Home: 7 Causes and Fixes

Weak showers and slow-filling tubs have a cause. From clogged aerators to failing galvanized pipe, here's how to track down low water pressure.

Low water pressure makes every shower and dish load frustrating. The fix depends on whether the problem is one fixture or the whole house.

If it's just one fixture

1. Clogged aerator or showerhead

Hard water scale collects in faucet aerators and showerheads. Unscrew and soak them in vinegar or replace them.

2. Faulty cartridge or valve

Worn or scaled cartridges restrict flow. Replacing the cartridge often restores full pressure.

3. Partially closed stop valve

Check the shut-off valves under the sink or behind the toilet; they may not be fully open.

If it's the whole house

4. The main valve isn't fully open

After a repair, the main shut-off or meter valve may have been left partially closed.

5. A failing pressure-reducing valve

If your home has a PRV near the main line, it can wear out and drop pressure too low.

6. A hidden leak

A significant leak under the slab or in the yard line diverts water and lowers pressure. Check your meter with everything off.

7. Corroded or scaled pipes

Galvanized pipe in older homes narrows from rust and scale until very little water gets through. If you have galvanized lines and low pressure, a repipe is usually the real fix.

If it's only hot water

Sediment in the water heater, a partially closed valve on the heater, or scale in a tankless heat exchanger can restrict hot water flow specifically.

If simple checks don't solve it, a plumber can measure your pressure at the hose bib and track down the cause.
