Much of South Florida's water comes from the Biscayne Aquifer, which sits in limestone. As a result, the water picks up calcium and magnesium, the minerals that make water "hard." It's safe to drink, but it's tough on plumbing.
Signs you have hard water
- White, crusty buildup on faucets, showerheads and glass shower doors
- Spots on dishes and glasses after the dishwasher
- Soap and shampoo that don't lather well
- Reduced flow from showerheads
What it does over time
Water heaters: Minerals settle in tanks as sediment, which insulates the water from the burner or element. The heater works harder, makes popping noises and wears out sooner. Tankless units build scale in the heat exchanger.
Fixtures and valves: Scale stiffens cartridges and valves, causing drips and handles that are hard to turn.
Appliances: Dishwashers, washing machines and ice makers can lose efficiency and life.
Treatment options
- Water softener: Removes hardness minerals through ion exchange. The most effective option for scale.
- Salt-free conditioner: Changes how minerals behave so they're less likely to stick. Lower maintenance, less complete than softening.
- Whole-home carbon filter: Removes chlorine and chloramine taste and odor; often paired with a softener.
- Reverse osmosis: Provides high-quality drinking water at one faucet.
The right system depends on your water, household size and goals. A simple water test is the place to start.
