A rotten-egg or sewer smell in the house is unpleasant, and sometimes a sign of a real problem. Here are the most common causes, from easiest to hardest to fix.
1. A dry P-trap
Every drain has a curved trap that holds water to block sewer gas. In a guest bath or floor drain that rarely gets used, that water evaporates. Run water for a minute and the smell often disappears.
2. Buildup in the drain
Hair, soap scum and food waste in the trap and drain line can rot and smell. Cleaning the trap or having the drain cleared usually fixes it.
3. A bad wax ring under the toilet
If the smell is near a toilet, the wax seal between the toilet and the floor may have failed. Look for a toilet that rocks or water around the base.
4. A blocked or missing vent
Plumbing vents let air into the drain system so traps don't get siphoned dry. A clogged vent can cause gurgling drains and sewer smells. Vent issues often need a plumber.
5. A cracked drain or sewer line
Older cast-iron drains can crack, letting sewer gas escape inside walls or under the slab. A persistent odor with no obvious source is a good reason for a camera inspection.
6. Septic problems
On septic, a full tank or failing drain field can push odors back into the house, often with slow drains.
When to call
If running water doesn't fix it, or you also notice gurgling, slow drains or backups, call a plumber. Sewer gas is unpleasant and, in high concentrations, unhealthy, so it's worth finding the source.
