Hurricane prep usually means shutters and supplies, but your plumbing deserves a few minutes too. This checklist helps you avoid the most common storm-related plumbing problems.
Before the storm
- Find and test your main shut-off. Make sure it turns easily. If it's stuck, have it replaced before you need it.
- Know how to turn off your water heater. Electric units have a breaker; gas units have a gas valve and a control knob.
- Store drinking water in clean containers, and fill bathtubs for flushing if you expect a boil-water notice or outage.
- Clear gutters and yard drains so rainwater moves away from the foundation.
- Consider a backwater valve if your home has had sewer backups during heavy rain.
- Secure outdoor equipment such as water softener tanks and tankless units with proper straps or brackets.
If you evacuate
Shut off the main water valve and turn off the water heater. This limits damage if a line breaks while you're gone.
After the storm
- Follow any boil-water notices from your utility before drinking tap water.
- Check for new leaks, low pressure or discolored water.
- If drains gurgle or back up, limit water use; the city system or your sewer line may be overwhelmed.
- If your water heater was submerged, don't use it until a professional inspects it.
- Watch for the smell of gas near gas appliances and leave immediately if you notice it.
After a major storm, plumbers get busy fast. Getting a stuck shut-off valve or aging water heater handled before the season starts is the best way to stay out of the queue.
