The first few minutes of a plumbing emergency matter most. Here's what to do while help is on the way.
1. Stop the water
For a single fixture, close the shut-off valve under the sink or behind the toilet. For a burst pipe or anything you can't isolate, shut off the main valve. In many South Florida homes it's near the water meter by the street or where the line enters the house.
2. Turn off the water heater if it's involved
For electric heaters, switch off the breaker. For gas heaters, turn the control to "off" or "pilot." Close the cold-water inlet valve on top of the tank.
3. Protect people and electricity
Stay out of standing water near outlets or appliances. If water is near your electrical panel or you smell gas, leave the area and call the utility.
4. Stop using drains if sewage is backing up
Every flush and every running faucet adds to a backup. Hold off until the line is cleared.
5. Move valuables and start drying
Pick up rugs, electronics and furniture. Use towels and a wet vacuum on standing water, and run fans to start drying.
6. Document the damage
Take photos and video before cleanup for your insurance company, and keep any failed parts the plumber removes.
7. Call a licensed plumber
Describe what happened and what you've already shut off. That helps the plumber arrive with the right parts and fix the problem on the first visit.
